My Teaching Manifesto
I believe.. learning is lifelong for both student and teacher.
I will.. create an equitable learning environment to ensure that students are enjoying the learning activities taking place. I apply myself in learning about many strategies and learning activities that can teach students the goals laid out by the Saskatchewan curriculum. I will utilize my students for the resources and knowledge they bring to the classroom, and learn from them. I will ensure that students are able to express their knowledge in ways that compliment their learning style to ensure success in learning - and hopefully a love for learning that will motivate them lifelong. I will create lessons with flexible solutions and time for open-ended exploration to show students there are many ways of learning and ways of solving a singular problem.

I believe.. that every students successes are vastly different, but should all be celebrated and honoured equally.
I will.. learn the learning styles of my students and the strategies for assessment that compliment the ways my students are best able to present their knowledge to ensure that ALL students are able to be successful. I will celebrate the student that gets a 10/10 on a learning task, the same way I would celebrate a student who improved drastically while receiving a 6/10. I understand that students have vastly different needs and realities with circumstances that are beyond their control, and as an educator it is important to take those things into consideration when addressing the success of a student.

I believe.. in treasuring the child who will become a plumber just as much as the child who will become a philosopher.
I will.. acknowledge that there are many different paths that individuals can take on their journey through life, and one is not better than another. I will educate my students on respecting all people regardless of the jobs they have, the education they have received, the socio-economic status they maintain and the identities they have. I want to educate my students on being kind and successful individuals, whatever job they choose to pursue. I will bring this believe into my classroom through content and materials. The content will not be geared towards students continuing an education because that may not be a reality for all students. I will prepare students for that path if that's what they choose, but I will also educate my students with real-life examples that can give them the necessary tools to navigate through their lives.

I believe.. that all students are worth the effort.
I will.. encourage all students to be the best they can be. I will not give on a child, regardless of the challenges that I will have to overcome. I will build relationships and trust with students to be able to open the door for conversation about the needs of the student. I want to become a safe space for the children in my learning community, and be an educator who is there for them beyond the learning tasks. This lesson came to life when I was in my first placement. My coordinating teacher knew each child and understood what the behaviours were indication and how to deal with what was going on. This took getting to know the students personalities, home lives, feelings and learning habits. She never gave up on a single student and was able to handle situations in an equitable way. She inspired me and taught me that each student can be reached.. it just takes time, effort and a caring heart.
