My Assessment Philosophy
My philosophy encompasses what I believe is important in assessment and the effective practices that aim for student success and growth.

Assessment FOR Learning - Gives information that guides teachers next steps based on the needs of the students - Gives students chance to improve and practice Mistakes become feedback for improvement. |
Assessment VS Evaluation Assessment (Formative): provides information about student learning that informs teaching VS Evaluation (Summative): communicates how well a student has learned what they need to know |
Triangulation Conversation and observation (throughout instruction and beyond) are the best way to gain understanding of a students learning from my minimal experience. For example, students were given classroom pets when they finished writing tasks. The students would come to me to show me the attributes of the shape of their pet (I was teaching 2-D and 3-D shapes). These conversations and observations of learning allowed me to see that they were freely thinking about the content. |
Prior to my pre-internship, I did not know how assessment would truly look like.
Afterwards, I understood assessment as much more than tests - assessment needs to vary and allow all types of learners to demonstrate their understanding in a way that they are able to (CHOICE). |
Reflection from the field: I planned meaningful assessment for my students prior to getting to know them (I had 2 days to get to know the class before teaching). I realized how important connecting the students to the assessment and the assessment to their real (and physical life) was immediately after the first lesson. Students need assessment that reflects how they learn, their prior experiences and (OF COURSE) their personal ways of knowing. |
Descriptive feedback:

Feedback is information that helps the learner improve! Therefore, students need to understand the language used in assessment - grade level language. Types of feedback can include:

Evaluative feedback:
